Following the successful launch of the hybrid gasification model in North Macedonia in December 2025, the Bulgarian energy company M-Gaz is now focusing its efforts on implementing this innovative concept in Albania. In close cooperation with its strategic partner, the State Oil and Gas Company of the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), the company is targeting the city of Korçë—the country’s eighth-largest city and a key economic and cultural hub.
Preparation for entry into the Albanian market is being carried out under “Project Nur” (Phase 0). High-level meetings have already taken place between representatives of M-Gaz, SOCAR Azerbaijan, SOCAR Balkans, and the Mayor of Korçë, Mr. Sotiraq Filo. To date, a detailed survey of potential sites has been completed, covering 26 commercial and 18 public-administrative users. The first phase envisions the gasification of 3 industrial companies and 6 public institutions, including schools, kindergartens, sports complexes, and municipal facilities. The objective is to commence gasification in the region by October 1, 2026.
The geographical location of Korçë, surrounded by mountain ranges and hills, makes the construction of a traditional gas distribution network a costly undertaking. Here, the M-Gaz hybrid model, supported by reliable supplies of Azerbaijani gas from SOCAR, offers an effective alternative. Through the “virtual pipeline” concept, access to clean energy is provided to regions lacking pipeline infrastructure, ensuring energy independence and security for the local community.
M-Gaz’s expertise in such challenging terrains also reveals significant potential for the future application of the hybrid gasification model within Azerbaijan, specifically in the liberated territories undergoing restoration and reconstruction in the Karabakh region, where the landscape presents similar infrastructure challenges for the energy grid. The use of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) guarantees energy security and independence for local communities, effectively overcoming geographical barriers.
For M-Gaz, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, the choice of Korçë holds symbolic significance. The city is home to one of the oldest and most established Bulgarian communities in the Balkans. By implementing modern energy solutions, the company aims to improve safety and living standards for residents, strengthening long-standing historical and cultural ties in the region.
The project is moving forward with the full cooperation of the municipal leadership, which recognizes hybrid gasification as a vital tool for sustainable development. The transition to natural gas will lead to a significant reduction in harmful emissions and the optimization of energy costs, reinforcing the partners’ commitment to sustainable development and bridging the energy inequality gap across Southeast Europe and beyond.
